Got ants? They’re just about everywhere. According to the experts, there are somewhere around 14,000 different types, and they add up to around ten quadrillion little creepy crawlers. That’s a 1 with 17 zeros, 100,000,000,000,000,000. Together they weigh about as much as all of the humans in the world. And sometimes it seems like they’re all in your house.
The web is full of common steps for keeping them away. Sweep up crumbs, plug gaps and cracks, spread mothballs or borax, use lemon scent and more. Most of these work to some extent, but the only long term solution is to eliminate the colony.
You can stomp on them, squash them, and vacuum them up and all that you’re doing is slowing them down. Ants reproduce very fast. Some queen ants can lay hundreds or even thousands of eggs a day.
There’s only one long term fix. You need to kill the queen, and there is an easy way to do it. Just feed the worker ants food spiked with slow-acting insecticide.
Worker ants will find the food and swarm around it for a while. You’ll be amazed at how many there can be. Each worker will bring a bit of food back to the nest…that’s why we need a slow working insecticide. The worker ants bring back food to share with the other worker ants, soldier ants, drone, princess ants, and even the queen. They’ll all die after eating the insecticide-laced bait.
The trick is finding what type of bait to use. Ants are fussy. Sometimes they will only eat sweet food, other times they want protein, and still other times they’ll eat only grease.
Discount store ant cup bait sometimes work, but many ants just ignore them. Why fool around with them when you can use the same products that the pros use.
